How to Grow Closer to God (Small Daily Habits That Actually Stick)

Most of us have tried the big spiritual reset at some point.

New year, new plan. You're going to read the Bible every morning for an hour, pray constantly, journal, memorize verses, the whole thing. It lasts about nine days. Then life happens, you miss a morning, and the guilt kicks in, and you quit the whole thing.

I've done that more than once. So have a lot of people who've told us the same story. Here's what I've learned. Growing closer to God isn't about one heroic push. It's about small things you actually keep doing.

Small and steady beats big and short

Think about any close relationship in your life. It didn't get close because of one grand gesture. It got close through a thousand small ordinary moments. Showing up, over and over.

It's the same with God. Five honest minutes a day, most days, will do more over a year than one giant burst that burns out in a week.

So aim lower than you think you should. Seriously. A habit you can keep on your worst, busiest, most tired day is the one that actually changes you.

A few habits that actually stick

None of these are impressive. That's the point. Pick one or two to start. Don't try to do all of them at once, because that's just the big reset in disguise.

  • A few minutes in Scripture. Not a whole chapter if that's too much. A few verses counts. If you don't know where to start, here's a simple plan for how to start reading the Bible.
  • One honest prayer. Talk to God like He's right there, because He is. It doesn't have to be long. We wrote about this in how to pray when you don't know what to say.
  • Gratitude. Name three things you're thankful for before you get out of bed. It quietly retrains how you see your day.
  • Obey the small nudge. Send the text. Apologize. Skip the thing you know you shouldn't. Following God in the small stuff is most of the walk.

Don't skip other people

You were not built to do this alone, and honestly it's really hard to grow in isolation.

Find a church, even if that feels awkward at first. Find one or two people you can be honest with about how your faith is actually going. Not the polished version. The real one.

Something happens when you say the quiet stuff out loud to another believer. The struggle loses some of its grip. That's a big part of why we started this brand, and why the shirts are meant to open doors to conversation. We got into that in the walking billboard post.

Grace over guilt, always

This is the one I want you to hear most.

You are going to miss days. You'll skip a week. You'll go through a stretch where you feel far off and flat. Every believer does, even the ones who look like they have it together.

When that happens, don't let guilt run the show. Guilt tells you God is annoyed with you and you might as well quit. That's a lie. God isn't standing there tapping His foot at your inconsistency.

He's a good Father. When you drift, you just come back. No big speech required. Closeness with God was never something you earn by performing. It's a gift you keep receiving. Take the pressure off and just come back.

Start today, start small

Don't wait for Monday or the first of the month. Pick one small habit and do it today. Then do it again tomorrow. That's the whole method.

Progress in your faith looks a lot less like a dramatic transformation and a lot more like a slow, steady walk in the same direction. Keep walking.
