Honestly, "But God" might be the two most powerful words in the whole Bible.
People search for what they mean because they show up everywhere once you start looking, usually right at the moment a story should have ended badly. Something is broken. Someone is stuck. The situation is dead. Then two words change the direction of everything: but God.
What "But God" actually means
It's a turning point. It's the hinge in a sentence where human effort runs out and God steps in.
The pattern is almost always the same. First comes the honest bad news. Then comes God doing what only He can do.
You were dead in your sin. But God made you alive. The grave was sealed. But God raised Him. They meant it for evil. But God meant it for good.
Where you'll find it in Scripture
Here are a few of the big ones. Read the first half, feel how stuck it is, then let the "but God" land.
- Ephesians 2:4-5. "But God, being rich in mercy... made us alive together with Christ." You were spiritually dead. That's where He started.
- Genesis 50:20. "You meant evil against me, but God meant it for good." Joseph, looking back on years of betrayal, still seeing God's hand in it.
- Romans 5:8. "But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." He didn't wait for you to clean up first.
- Psalm 73:26. "My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart forever." For the days you're running on empty.
- Acts 13:30. "But God raised him from the dead." Four words. The whole gospel.
Why it matters on a hard day
Most of us can write the first half of our own "but God" sentence pretty easily. The diagnosis. The breakup. The bank account. The thing you can't fix.
The good news of the Bible is that your sentence doesn't end there. "But God" means the story isn't finished, because you were never the one holding it together.
I think that's why the phrase hits people so hard. It's honest about how bad things get, and it still refuses to end in despair.
