I run a Christian clothing brand, so I think about this a lot. Here's what I've learned about what guys look for, and where our stuff fits. I'll leave other brands out of it and give you the checklist instead.
Fit comes first
If it doesn't fit, he won't wear it. It doesn't matter how good the message is.
A lot of Christian clothing, ours included, is cut oversized or boxy. A lot of guys like that look, with some room in the chest and shoulders that drop a little. It also means you can't always size the way you would at a regular store.
Before you buy, check three things on the product page:
- Is it oversized, slightly oversized, or a regular fit?
- How tall is the model, and what size is he wearing?
- Is there a size chart with measurements?
On our Jesus Saves hoodie, for example, some of the photos show Brett, who is 6'1" and wearing a large. If you're between sizes, the fit notes and size chart on each page will tell you more than any rule of thumb.
Weight and fabric
Guys notice how a piece feels the second they pick it up. A thin tee feels cheap, even if the design is great.
Look for the fabric on the product page. You'll usually see 100% cotton or a cotton and polyester blend. Some brands list GSM, which stands for grams per square meter. A higher number means a thicker fabric.
Both kinds of fabric have a place. Our Jesus Saves hoodie and Jesus Saves zip-up are a 320 GSM blend of 50% cotton and 50% polyester. We picked that blend on purpose. It keeps them soft and helps them hold their shape over time. The stitched lettering on them is 100% cotton. Our Jesus Is King hoodie is 100% cotton.
Subtle or bold?
This is the big one. Some guys want a message you can read from across the parking lot. Some want something smaller that only comes up if someone asks.
Both are good. Ask yourself one question: if a stranger asks about it, would I be glad to answer? If the answer is yes, you've got the right one.
- Bold: The Jesus Is King camo tee and the Jesus Saves hoodie say it big. We call that being a walking billboard.
- Short and simple: The But God tee is two words. People who know the phrase get it right away, and people who don't might ask. Here's what "But God" means.
- Built on a verse: The Walk By Faith tee comes from 2 Corinthians 5:7.
Stitched or printed?
Printed designs are ink on fabric. Stitched designs have fabric lettering sewn onto the garment, sometimes with embroidery mixed in. You can feel the edges. It has a depth a flat print doesn't have.
Many of our designs are stitched. Stitched, not printed. The Jesus Is King camo tee has stitched camo patchwork lettering. The But God tee pairs cotton appliqué with small embroidered letters. On the Jesus Is King hoodie, the Stitched Light Green Camo color has stitched patchwork lettering and the other camo colors are printed, so pick your color with that in mind.

Colors he'll wear
Guys tend to reach for the same few colors. Navy, gray, green, brown, camo. If a piece only comes in a color he never wears, it'll sit in the closet no matter what it says.
So start with what's already in his rotation. The But God tee comes in Navy, Green and Dark Gray. The Jesus Is King hoodie and tee come in camo. The Jesus Saves hoodie comes in a bunch of colors. Brown and Royal Blue are easy picks, and the Navy one says BE STILL & KNOW.
